Skinbase, the mutant mouse skin and hair pathology database was established to provide an image reference resource for the histopathology of skin and its associated structures in induced and spontaneous mutations of the laboratory mouse.
The history of mouse genetics is full of examples of the importance of skin and hair phenotypes in the development of our current understanding of the function of many genes and increasingly the mouse has become the model organism of choice for improving our understanding of skin and hair biology in human conditions such as alopecia areata or ichthyosis.
The images presented here are indexed by the common name of the mouse allele. Annotation of the images provides a commentary on the features of the manifestations of the lesion in the skin and associated structures.
Some images of human lesions are included where a mutation of the orthologous gene was demonstrated in the mouse, but for more information about human skin lesions please consult the links on this page.
